If you want to do a bit more than relax in the sun whilst you're here there are a wide range of activities available locally.
If you are planning a walking holiday in Spain, this is a fantastic walking area. If you are looking for gentle walking (or cycling) we are very close to the start of Spain's longest green route - the Via Verde "Ojos Negros". This is a car-free route which runs along the bed of an old mineral railway starting in the orange groves of Algimia and running inland for 155km to the rugged scenery of Teruel. You can walk the whole route over 2 or 3 days or just short sections. You can find out more information on the Vias Verdes network at www.viasverdes.com.
If it's a more challenging walking holiday you're looking for there is a network of local routes across the Sierra Espadan and Sierra Calderona mountains. Many of the local routes also link up to longer distance routes such as the GR7 and GR10. You can select shorter half day walks, whole day walks or even cross the Iberian peninsula from Puçol to Portugal!
Cycling is the second most popular sport in Spain, making it a great destination for cycling holidays! The local roads are often taken over by brightly coloured cycling clubs as the roads here are popular for both road training and competition races. Mountain biking is also very popular with a network of tracks and trails offering plenty of challenges for all levels.
We will be organising "all-inclusive" walking and cycling holidays this autumn so please let us know if you would like more information.
Golf is one of the most popular sports and the reason that many people come to Spain. There are a wide selection of golf courses suiting different levels of ability. At the moment our nearest golf course is the Club de Golf Escorpion at Betera, 20 minutes drive away. Described as "A fine private club offering parkland-style golf with a mountain backdrop. Tree-lined and interesting." For more details see information on the Official Tourism site of the Region of Valencia.
Skiing - yes really! Many people are surprised to find out that the ski slopes of the Javalambre mountains in Teruel are only an hour and half away by car making it possible to go for a day or short break. There are two ski stations - Javalambre and Valdelinares which are usually open from December to March. For non-skiers, the Javalambre region provides strikingly different scenery and a network of walking and cycling routes.
Being close to the Mediterranean there are a variety of watersports available nearby including sailing and windsurfing. The Americas Cup has created a lot of excitement and investment in sailing clubs along the Valencian coast - this means that many have upgraded their facilities and the range of activities available. Scuba diving trips can be booked to dive in the waters around the Islas Columbretes near Castellon. The volcanic islands are a protected nature reserve so the numbers of visitors are strictly limited meaning that dives have to be prebooked.
There are a range of other activities available nearby and we are happy to arrange bookings for you.
If you enjoy something a little less strenuous there are plenty of other interesting activities to fill your day.
Local crafts - local artisans are renowned for their walking sticks and reed baskets made from the reeds growing along the river banks.
Serrano hams from Segorbe and Teruel, hand-made cheeses from Castellnovo and Almedijar (perfect with tomato marmalade from Altura!). From December onwards truffle themed events take place in the villages towards Teruel. An annual truffle conference takes place and restaurants organise gastronomic truffle themed meals.
Many of the villages of the Sierra Espadan have their own mineral waters - Almedijar, Chovar, Bejis.
Fiestas - there are many local fiestas throughout the year, both large and small. The most famous is the Fallas in Valencia during March, but there are many others, usually involving bulls and fireworks.
Castles - nearly every village, town and city seems to have a castle in Spain reflecting the country's turbulent past.
FIB - International Festival of Benicassim, or "Glastonbury on the beach" held in July www.fiberfib.com
Spanish language lessons - if you would like to take the opportunity to improve your Spanish we can arrange a private tutor or classes in Valencia .
We will be organising "all-inclusive" holidays in the near future, please contact us if you would like more information.
